In 2005, with a young child at home, I decided I could no longer do community theater. I stopped auditioning and stepped back from many of my volunteer roles. Less than a month later, I learned that the Lansing State Journal was hiring a theater reviewer. I applied and a new chapter in my writing life was opened.
In 2007, I was chosen as a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow in Theater and Musical Theater Journalism at the University of Southern California. It was an intensive ten days that would connect me with other theater writers and lay a foundation for my future arts writing.
Eventually I branched out to writing reviews and the occasional preview for PrideSource’s Between the Lines and Encore Michigan. For Encore Michigan, I covered Michigan theaters west of Ann Arbor and in Flint. I joined the American Theatre Critics Association.
In 2019, when Gannett began to cut back on their freelance budget nationwide, I started writing for Times Media publications in Arizona and, a year later, in California.
In 2021, I began writing some national theater stories for Encore Monthly and OnStage Blog among others. In 2022, I began writing for The Chicago Reader and American Theatre.
