Shakespeare

Shakespeare ranks high among my favorite things to review, my favorite type of play to go and see. Nothing can beat good Shakespeare. Of course, little is worse than bad Shakespeare. My bucket list is to see all of his works live. I have three plays left on that list.

Here are a selection of reviews from the past several years:

Richard III, Encore Michigan, Pigeon Creek Shakespeare, April 10, 2019

  • Richard III is a story of villainy and politics. It asks how a villain manages to achieve so much and wrest control from those who would rule well or who are seemingly destined to rule. It tells a story of a man who lies without ceasing and yet manages to get people to either believe him or to determine that his lies are acceptable. He continually finds henchmen who will be loyal to him for the favors that he gives, even as he continually betrays those loyal to him and they lose their jobs and heads for the slightest of offenses.

  • Kauzlaric mixes in a dash of modern words and anachronistic actions that are all clearly intentional, done the way the creators of such shows as “Spring Awakening” and “Hamilton” did with their period pieces. They are choices that make the show sparkle and add a dash of familiarity for the audiences.
